Summer Reading Program Leader  - Position Description 2018

Term of position: Monday, May 7 - Friday, August 24, 2018

Hourly Rate: $14.00

Reports: to Head Librarian

Description: Plan, organize and lead the Summer Reading program at the West Perth Public LIbrary for children based on this year's theme: Read Around Town. 

Registration is divided into 3 age groups: 4-5 year olds, 6-8 year olds, and 9 and up.

The summer leader will be responsible for conducting programs in the library and, for the first time, offering story time/craft time at various community locations (e.g. parks, playgrounds) and events.

The 'in-house' portion of the program for participants will begin on Tuesday, July 3. Community programs will take place beginning in June.

As part of the position, the successful applicant will also assist library staff in special projects as assigned.

Hours of Work:
6 hours per day including some evening hours. The schedule for the program leader may also include occasional weekend hours in the case of special events.

Duties:
  • Plan weekly themes and programs, organize all materials and coordinate visits by special guests/ entertainers etc.
  • Decorate the library's program area
  • Assist with registering children for the program for the regularly scheduled in-house portion of the program and plan programs for taking out in the community
  • Assist in promoting the program prior to its commencement
  • Prepare evaluation survey for end of the summer
  • Work within a designated budget
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Completion of at least one year of Early Childhood Education/Bachelor of Education or registered in a field of study related to children and children's programming
  • Must have experience in programming for children
  • Very creative, organized, responsible and energetic with a flexible schedule
  • Possessing strong leadership skills and excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of children's literature
  • Must be returning to school in fall of 2018
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Obtain a clear vulnerable sector police check
